Glenury Royal 36 Year Old Single Malt Whisky
Glenury Royal's founder, Robert Barclay, took a sporting view of life. As a young man, his strength and endurance were immortalised when, in 1809, he became the first man to walk a mile each and every hour for 1000 hours in succession.
Understandably tiring of such feats, he established a distillery on his estate in Scotland's fertile Eastern Highlands, renamed Glenury Royal after the granting of a Royal Warrant in 1835. In later years it became one of the last distilleries still powered entirely by water, taken from a mill lade running beneath its length.
Glenury Royal was rebuilt in 1966, and this bottling comes from casks filled in 1970. The distillery closed in 1985 but Captain Barclay's accomplishment lives still, in a single malt whisky that repays very long ageing, as this fine 36 Year Old fully mature yet retaining plenty of flavour, will show.
Deep amber, it is mellow and subtly aromatic, with a surprisingly complex flavour. The nose needs time to breathe, it is faded, fragrant and sweet, with polished wood and clean spice, then traces of pear, candied fruits and macaroons. Water softens these aromas into sweet yet spicy, subtle but heady floral notes and, later, almond paste and bonbons dusted with icing sugar.
This full bodied malt is aromatic and mouth drying, yet attractively balanced. On the palate it starts sweet, then dusty spices dominate as it dries gradually, to reveal a good balance of primary tastes, all subtle. The flavour is more complex than the nose suggests, with plenty of distillery character. A little water smoothes out the dancing, spicy finish, which has a lingering woody aftertaste and is, as you might expect, very long lasting. A characteristic Captain Barclay would surely recognise.
This very rare 36 year old Glenury Royal from 1970 Casks is the third in a series of special releases from this long closed Distillery. It will make especially interesting comparison with the recent bottling from 1968 Casks, also released as a 36 year old.
